Abstract:
The aim of this work is to design and control of a low cost portable mechanical ventilator. This design should be implemented in large quantities to safely ventilate COVID-19 patients. The main requirements for a low-cost ventilator are determined according to the information gathered from clinicians. Two different ventilator concepts are proposed, such that the ventilator can be operated either in case of a pressurized air-oxygen mixture is available or not. The first concept is a mechanical ventilator that produces the pressurized air-oxygen mixture using an AMBU bag which is actuated by an electric motor. The second concept is based on regulating the already pressurized air and oxygen existing in tanks. The proposed design allows gentle air delivery to the patient, such that both volume control and pressure control modes are supported. The design is user-friendly and easy to manufacture. Also, the sophisticated control system ensures flexible inputs, patient data monitoring, and various levels of alarms. Simulation results and experimental work are presented and have shown to be applicable compared to previous works.
